Lack of knowledge about a new exotic pet is the number one reason exotic species end up in the veterinarian’s office. Inexperienced pet owners often fail to do some basic research regarding their pet of choice, resulting in poor husbandry and medical problems.
Avoid buying an exotic pet on impulse. Taking the time to educate yourself about the exotic species you are considering adopting is an important part of good pet ownership.
Exotic Pet Dietary Requirements
A good diet is part of caring for any pet, but is especially important for exotic pets. Most exotic pet species have very specific dietary needs. It is important to understand exactly what your new pet needs to stay healthy and strong. Before investing in an exotic pet, be sure to learn the following:
- Special mineral and vitamin needs
- Specific roughage needs
- What types of treats are appropriate
- How much your pet should eat
- What, if any, foods and treats should be avoided
Exotic Pet Housing Needs
Most exotic species have specific environmental requirements to survive. Decide what type of enclosure is best for your new pet and be sure its new home is safe and stimulating. Consider:
- Type of bedding
- Safety of heating elements
- Location of the enclosure
- Safety of cleaning solutions and chemicals
- Whether plants are safe or necessary
- What type of toys or stimulus your new pet will need to thrive (very important for birds)
Special Health Needs for the Exotic Pet
Knowing when your exotic pet is sick is not as obvious as it is with a dog or cat. Familiarize yourself with what signs of illness might be seen in your species of choice.
Likewise, make yourself familiar with the health concerns specific to your new exotic pet. Does the species have any health risks to humans that you should consider? Are there any specific health problems or concerns that the species is known for? Are there everyday things in the environment that may be hazardous to this particular pet?
It is also important to have a veterinarian who is familiar with your pet’s species. Seven Hills Veterinary Hospital is proud to provide medical care for exotics, and our vets have experience with a wide variety of exotic pet species.
