Global Outreach
Dr. Demey and his mentor, Dr. Brod, recently volunteered their time at Amici Cannis Hospital de Animales, a non-profit veterinary hospital in Ecuador. Orthopedic injuries are prevalent in this region, yet there is a significant shortage of veterinarians skilled in performing the necessary surgical repairs. As a result, many injuries that could be treated with surgery often lead to amputations due to the availability of specialized surgical care.
To address this, Dr. Demey and Dr. Brod embarked on a mission to empower the Amici Cannis team by providing them with the essential skills and training required for orthopedic surgeries. They conducted a comprehensive, two-day, hands-on orthopedic course, equipping the local veterinarians with the knowledge and expertise needed to perform these critical procedures
Amici Cannis Hospital de Animales
Amici Cannis' mission is to protect and improve the lives of animals in Cotacachi and surrounding Indigenous villages in Ecuador by:
- Providing high-quality veterinary services to stray dogs and cats, companion animals with owners, and those who cannot afford treatment
- Working to combat abandonment and overpopulation, providing sterilization and emergency veterinary care
- Teaching children to respect and care for animals
Since opening the animal hospital, the Amici Cannis team has sterilized an average of 1,500 dogs and cats per year (over 10,000 animals in 2023) and provided medical care to thousands of pets and community dogs (previously street dogs).
