For the pet-loving employees of companies that don’t generally allow pets in the workplace, at least there’s Take Your Dog To Work Day on Friday, June 26th, 2015. Instead of gazing longingly at Fido’s framed photograph, you can bring him or her into the workplace (with your boss’ permission, of course)!
Below are our tips for a memorable Take Your Dog To Work Day.
The History
Pet Sitters International created Take Your Dog To Work Day in 1999 to honor companion animals and aid in pet adoptions. Every year, pets mark this national holiday on the Friday after Father’s Day. For owners of cats and other wonderful pets, the entire week of June 22-26 is Take Your Pet To Work Week.
The Bottom Line
Companies that promote keeping animals in the workplace tout that morale, trust, and happiness blossom in the presence of a shared pet. Take Your Dog To Work Day focuses on that powerful combination of shared admiration and amusement, provided certain petiquette is established.
Sniff Out Any Dangers
You know your dog the very best. Prior to bringing him or her into your workplace, conduct a clean sweep throughout the environment and clear away anything that could be hazardous to your pet. You probably won’t be able to eliminate every enticing thing (you know, so you can still perform your job’s duties and all), but getting down on your dog’s level will open your eyes to things you must be aware of during his or her visit. Also:
- Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date
- Bring along soothing items from home, such as a blanket or toys
- Pack your pet’s food and water bowls, and his or her favorite snacks
- Ensure your pet’s leash is packed and identification tags/microchip are current
- Keep up a timely walk/bathroom break schedule to give your pet space and time to do his or her business; bring emergency clean-up items, just in case
- Remove all chocolate, coffee, or sweet treat dangers
- Assess your pet’s behavior and if he or she isn’t stranger savvy, make the proper call to leave him or her at home
- Don’t force your pet to socialize with your co-workers or other pets; instead let those who are interested come to your work area
- Watch your dog’s body language and do not allow play to escalate; rather, separate him or her for a bit to calm down
- Remember that not all people love dogs
- Reward your pup’s good manners
Take Your Dog To Work Day Is Not Only Fun
Of course it’s fun, but Take Your Dog To Work Day can also be educational! Your company could host a session with a pet care professional (hint, hint) to highlight the endless benefits of adoption and responsible pet ownership. Other ways to enjoy the special day may include:
- Have a hot dog buffet
- Costume contest
- Photo contest
- Best trick contest
A Friday Like No Other
Your pup will likely be tuckered out after a full day sniffing around your workplace (and co-workers), so be sure to give him or her extra time to snooze after you return home. If you notice anything unusual, give us a call. Happy Take Your Dog To Work Day from all your pals at 7 Hills!
