But how do you know if your pet’s ready for a sweater or needs a pair of booties, and how do you know what to get so that it will fit? Never fear! Seven Hills Veterinary Hospital is here!
Which Pets Need Winter Clothes
Pets need clothes for a variety of reasons. Some are simply not able to conserve their body heat as well as others, while others may just like the way a snug sweater makes them feel a little more cozy and secure. If your pet identifies with the following, consider investing in some cold-weather pet apparel…
- Older or affected by a health condition such as arthritis, hypothyroidism, or heart disease
- Still a puppy
- Underweight
- A small, light framed breed such as a Chihuahua or Greyhound
- Sporting a close haircut (such as a poodle cut)
- Going to be outside for extended periods, such as for a hunting trip
- Needs paw protection
- If temperatures are consistently below freezing
Larger dogs, many of which are native to colder climates, that have a thick coat probably do not need extra clothes to stay warm. They may benefit, however, from boots that protect their paws from ice and salt.
How to Select Winter Clothes for Your Pet
When choosing clothes for your pet, style is important, but so is comfort. It is important to take the time to properly fit your dog for his or her safety and protection.
While pet clothes are often sized small, medium, and large, there is not a universal standard for what those sizes mean. Most manufacturers provide measurement suggestions for their sizing. Helpful stats to have on your pet include:
- Neck circumference
- Chest circumference
- Distance from the neck to waist
- Distance from shoulder to the ground
- Current weight
Whatever the item you are fitting, be sure that it is easy to put on and take off and does not restrict your pet’s movement. Double check to be sure that your pet can use the restroom normally.
Items should fit snugly so that your pet cannot become tangled or pull it off when moving. Also be sure that the clothing item does not interfere with your pet’s vision. Ideal pet clothes are breathable, durable, and easy to wash. If you can’t throw it in the washing machine, chances are it isn’t going to last very long. A water-resistant fabric is also a nice feature.
Whether you choose to purchase your dog a sweater, coat, or boots, it is important to keep in mind the practicality and comfort of the item. If your pet won’t wear it, it is not going to solve the problem you purchased it to solve.
Even though dog’s winter clothes are often cute and may seem a little over the top, they are definitely a necessity for some. With the right gear, almost any dog can enjoy the winter weather ahead.
