Friday, February 20, is National Love Your Pet Day, and we’d like to discuss the meaningful ways pets contribute to the lives of their humans. From benefiting physical health to enhancing emotional wellness, there are scads of reasons to love your pet.
Healthy Additions
Pets motivate people to get up, get out, and get moving – even if it’s just to get off the couch to open up the back door. At their best, pets inspire activities such as hunting, hiking, agility training, or even swimming together. Besides helping owners trim down, pets can lower cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart attacks.
In addition to the health benefits of pet ownership, the love and levity pets bring to their owner’s lives can also result in less stress and more laughter. This creates a happier, longer life together.
Emotional Wellness
For many of us, pet ownership adds a social element to our lives. Whether it is a conversation at the dog park or in line at the pet food store; or just meeting other folks while you and your pet are out and about, our pets are the ultimate conversation starters. Even pet-less people find themselves smiling at pets and their owners and breaking the barriers of silence to say hi and pet the doggy. These types of interactions are socially healthy and can boost confidence and self-esteem.
Suggestions For Love Your Pet Day
We love that pets have their own Valentine’s-esque holiday, and to celebrate we’ve put together some ideas that may help you to pamper your pet.
Treats – There is really nothing better than homemade treats for your pet. Doing so, will show him or her how much you care, especially when followed up with a serious snuggle session.
Pampering – February is a wonderful time to schedule a grooming appointment if it’s been a little while. The snow, salts, ice, muck, sand, and de-icers can really wreak havoc on your pet’s fur, coat, skin, and paws. A little pampering in this department could go a long way. Also, scheduling your pet’s wellness exam is a wonderful possibility. Get vaccines and parasite prevention updated for the coming outdoor season, or start practicing the numerous ways you can contribute to your pet’s dental care.
Attention – Go for an extra long walk together, teach your pet a new trick, purchase a new toy and play together, or just spoil him or her with a long time cuddled up together.
Spread the word – Social media is a tremendous way to show you care about your pet. Use your Facebook page or Twitter account to proclaim to the world how important your connection is to your pet. Help others celebrate Love Your Pet Day, too!
